This is how they keep warm! They wrap their tails around themselves like a sort of blanket and sometimes put it in their mouth to hold it around themselves.
In captivity there’s a serious amount of sensory deprivation for an animal like a snow leopard. Ordinarily, it’s accustomed to roaming miles of obstacle-abundant altitude range, in addition to having some social interaction, especially for females with kittens.
I get mixed feelings when I see videos like this. On the one hand, it’s perhaps sad, but on the other, it’s good that they would have enough snow leopards safe from poaching in order to insure a breeding stock that would satisfy species management strategies.
