When their leader was killed by a competitor, the elephant herd came together in this moving scene to pay their last respects to him. In heartbreaking video, some of the animals can be seen petting the dead mammal’s body as it lies on a lake’s edge.
The remarkable scenes were noticed by locals in the vicinity of Anuradhapura, close to the Kalawewa reserve in Sri Lanka, and were photographed. In the video, there are about ten elephants surrounding their dead king, but some accounts claim that there were as many as 300 animals there. According to News First, the behemoth was killed during a struggle with a rival elephant that frequents the area close to the reserve.
