Roona Begum, a 15-month-old baby from India, made headlines around the world after she was born with a swollen head due to hydrocephalus, or water on the brain. The condition caused her head to swell to a circumference of 94cm, more than double the average size of a newborn’s head. Roona’s parents, Abdul and Fatima, were poor and had no access to medical care. They were desperate to find help for their daughter, but there was no hope in sight. Then, in 2013, a group of doctors and volunteers from the non-profit organization, Mission Smile, heard of Roona’s story and offered to provide her with the medical care she desperately needed.
The Mission Smile team provided Roona with the necessary medical care and performed two surgeries to reduce the size of her head. The first surgery was successful in reducing the size of her head by 30%, and the second surgery was able to reduce it by an additional 10%. Today, Roona is a healthy and happy toddler with a normal-sized head. She is living a normal life, attending school and playing with her friends. Her parents are incredibly thankful to Mission Smile for giving their daughter the opportunity to have a normal life.
