Baby elephant plonks down in the mud, struggles to get up

Like in this video, baby elephants can be both cute and humorous at the same time. This lovely newborn elephant made the decision to fall face first into the dirt before making the funniest attempts to stand back up. It is an excellent idea to pull over and observe when you are on safari and come across a sizable herd of elephants. In almost every case, a large mating herd of elephants in the wild will exhibit the most intriguing behavior. Elephant ladies and their babies make up breeding herds. Additionally, there is a considerable likelihood that a herd like this will contain a few newborn elephants, which is always fun to see.

When we came upon a sizable breeding herd of elephants, we did precisely that. The elephants were arranged in front of us when we came to a stop in the distance under a shady tree. Some of the elephants liked splashing themselves with mud and water at a little watering hole in the late morning when it was already hot. There were other young elephants in the group, but one in particular drew our attention. The newborn elephant was circling around the edge of the mud pit when it abruptly dove headfirst into the muck.

It’s obvious that this baby elephant concluded that plopping down in the mud will be much faster than dousing itself with muck. With its back in the air and one side of its face lying in the mud, the newborn elephant had a rather odd appearance. After a while, the baby elephant decided to lie down on its side and enjoy the cooling sensation of the mud against its skin. Then, when the baby elephant decided it was time to stand again, the situation turned funny. By elevating its body and kicking in the air, the newborn elephant made several repeated movements from side to side and up and down in an effort to gain momentum.

Watching this lovely baby elephant struggle to get back up was amusing. The infant elephant eventually gathered enough speed to fall to its knees. The newborn elephant lingered for a while before standing up, looking so adorable and comical with mud all over one side of its face and body. We joyfully left the herd as the baby elephant went off to find its mother since we were so taken with how cute it was.
