The conservation zoo’s two-week-old calf, Nandi, had been spending time with her mother Tuli in an enclosed area of her enclosure, but on Monday, September 6, keepers decided she was ready to meet the rest of her herd and head outside to explore the 18-acre habitat.
Nandi, who was born on August 21, is a wonderful addition to the breeding program for endangered species in Europe. She joins the herd of eight Southern white rhinos (often referred to as a “crash”) at the Zoo, which includes her mother Tuli and father Sizzle.
The second-largest land mammal in the world is the southern white rhinoceros. There are only around 10,000 Southern white rhinos left in the wild, and their numbers are dwindling as a result of poaching, habitat loss, the introduction of alien species, and climate change.
Every day, Nandi grows more self-assured on her large, rubbery feet and becomes more playful and observant of her surroundings.
