For The First Time In Over 100 Years Baby Tortoises Were Born On A Galapagos Island

“Save the turtles!” is one of the environmental movement’s most popular slogans. Obviously, the sentiment must also apply to tortoises!

But it is happening—at least for the tortoise population in the Galapagos Islands. Baby tortoises were born for the first time in nearly a century!

While this is a wonderful feel-good story, it is important to note that many other animals are designated as endangered species, with no action taken to protect them. As the ecosystem changes and deteriorates, climate change will exacerbate the problem.

Nonetheless, let us use this amazing story to motivate us to preserve more animals!

Pinzon is one of the Galapagos Islands’ islands. It is a home to a variety of beautiful animals. Giant tortoises are among them.
Giant tortoises are unfortunately on the endangered species list. In the 1700s, ships arriving in the Galapagos Islands brought rats with them.

Rats liked to eat tortoise eggs, causing turtle populations to decline and the ecology to suffer. This d.evastation went on for decades.

Tortoise eggs were removed from Pinzon in the 1960s and sent to hatch on another island to keep them safe from vermin.
However, the rats continued to destroy the area, so a poison was devised in 2012 to eliminate the remaining rats.

In 2015, it was announced that for the first time in over a century, baby tortoises were born on Pinzon.

At this point, there are at least 500 tortoises!
