The lions in these encounters are not elite or master hunters and don’t seem to have mastered the standard techniques lions use on buffalo (or maybe they are really desperate due to hunger and take the risk of getting gored). A 500+ lb Alpha lion elite killer would have no problem killing any size of buffalo. They always attack (carefully) from the rear and get a good grip on the spine, unless they can get a death grip on the throat early in the initial attack. Then it’s over for the buffalo in less than a minute.
