This poor nyala is stuck between a rock and a hard place. Either it faces a pack of wild dogs on land or retreats to the water where hippos and crocodiles lurk beneath the surface! Which would you take your chances with? This unbelievable sighting played out at Royal Malewane in the Greater Kruger.

The buck fought bravely. It was remarkable that it managed to get the hippos to back off as well, but there’s only so much you can do against overwhelming odds. At least death in the jaws of the crocodile will be less painful than wild dogs.
