Rare Irrawaddy dolphin found in Indonesian waters

Back in 2012, for the first time, Irrawaddy dolphins were spotted in West Kalimata, a part of Idoesia Boreo, which is well known for its rich wildlife and dense tropical forests.

“The presence of Irrawaddy dolphis in West Kalimata waters was previously unknown, so we are excited with the results of this preliminary study and hope this will help reveal information about the population and distribution of this unique species.”
lberts Tji, conservation biologist for WWF-Indonesia and one of the school’s leading scientists

The team also escorted a group of Humpback dolphins, demonstrating how diverse the biodiversity of the Kalimata waters is.

“The results of this study indicate the importance of protecting the dolphies’ habitat from the origins of the rivers in the Heart of Boreo.”

“To the island’s lower rivers, the icldig waterways of the Bat mpar magroves and ypah forests, the arrow straits, and the coastal areas of Kb Raya, West Kalimata.”

Globally, there are around 6,000 Irrawaddy dolphins, with the majority in the coastal waters of Bangladesh.

The remnant population can be found throughout Southeast Asia, including Thailand, Cambodia, Indonesia, the Philippines, and the eastern coast of Australia.

Irrawaddy dolphis are classified as vulnerabilities by the IUCN, but in some areas—inclding the Mekog River, the yeyawardi River, and the Mahakam River in East Kalimata—the species is listed as critically endangered.
