When you want to eat your usual food but your friends insist on eating vegan today

The aroma of frying onions usually sparked a Pavlovian response in me. A low rumble of anticipation would begin in my stomach, followed by a mental slideshow of crispy chicken schnitzel, nestled on a bed of mashed potatoes swimming in gravy. Today, however, the familiar scent was a cruel tease. I was trapped, a carnivore amongst herbivores, a schnitzel yearning in a tofu wilderness.

It had started innocently enough. A casual lunch plan with my usual suspects, Liam, Maya, and Chloe. But then Maya, radiating a self-righteous glow that could power a small town, announced it: “Vegan today! For the earth!”

Liam, ever the peacemaker, nodded enthusiastically. Chloe, a notorious follower of trends, chirped her agreement. I, however, felt a primal scream bubbling in my throat. My usual, comforting, golden-brown haven was being replaced by… well, I didn’t even know what vegan food really was. Was it just…salad?

We ended up at “The Green Sprout,” a place that looked like a botanical garden on acid. Vines dripped from the ceiling, the tables were made of reclaimed wood, and the menu was a dizzying array of things I couldn’t pronounce. “Tempeh bacon,” “jackfruit tacos,” “activated almonds.” It sounded less like food and more like a science experiment.

Liam, bless his cotton socks, tried to be encouraging. “Come on, man, live a little! It’s all about trying new things!” He beamed, brandishing a menu like a sacred scroll.

I sighed, the schnitzel dream receding like a tide going out. “Fine,” I grumbled. “But if I start photosynthesizing, I’m blaming you.”

The food arrived. Maya’s “raw zucchini noodles with cashew pesto” looked like a crime scene in a vegetable patch. Chloe’s “beetroot burger” bled a disturbing shade of purple onto the wooden platter. Liam, ever optimistic, devoured his “lentil loaf” with gusto.

And then there was my “spicy tofu scramble.” It looked, frankly, like someone had vomited sunshine. But, I reasoned, what did I have to lose?

I took a tentative bite.

Surprisingly… it wasn’t awful. The tofu had a pleasant, almost eggy, texture, and the spices actually packed a punch. It was… interesting.

As we ate, Maya lectured us on the environmental impact of animal agriculture, Chloe rattled off the latest vegan celebrity endorsements, and Liam, bless his heart, kept making complimentary noises about the food. I found myself listening, actually listening, not just tuning them out while fantasizing about crispy skin and juicy meat.

The truth was, I was realizing that eating vegan wasn’t some bizarre punishment. It was just… different. It was about exploring flavors I’d never considered, thinking about where my food came from, and maybe, just maybe, contributing to something bigger than myself.

By the time we finished, I wasn’t a convert, far from it. I still craved that schnitzel. But I was… curious. Maybe I’d even try that jackfruit taco next time.

Leaving the Green Sprout, I felt a lightness I hadn’t expected. Maybe it was the lack of heavy gravy, or maybe it was the feeling of stepping outside my comfort zone. Whatever it was, I knew one thing: even surrounded by devout vegans, a carnivore could learn to appreciate the (occasionally) bizarre and surprisingly tasty world of plant-based cuisine. And maybe, just maybe, a little bit of broccoli wouldn’t kill me after all.
