Baby pink elephant thrives against all the odds
When a lucky safari ranger came upon a rare newborn pink elephant, he was astounded to see Disney-like scenes.
Last month, Tim Jansen van Vuuren made the remarkable observation while escorting a party through the MalaMala Game Reserve in South Africa’s Kruger National Park.
The creature was surrounded by her family as she eagerly played in the sea of green grass. At the time, she was the youngest member of the herd, only two or three weeks old.
Her unusual pink coloring is thought to have resulted from leucism, a disorder distinct from albinism that causes a partial loss of pigmentation.
