Elephants are adored by all. They are the world’s largest living land animals, and they are magnificent creatures beloved all over the world. Although elephants are com.monly thought of as benign animals, they are actually extremely deadly — owing primarily to their enormous size — though they may also be da.ngerously hostile at times. And when I say agg.ressive, I mean it.
Seriously, you don’t want to be in the way of an elephant who awoke on the wrong side of the bed.
Being hi.t by an elephant at full speed is akin to being hit by a truck, weighing 10,000 to 13,000 pounds and capable of speeds of roughly 25 mph. A truck, on the other hand, does not have two p.iercing tusks.
In this video, a poor buffalo learns this lesson firsthand when a bull elephant s.lams into it, stab.bing and k.illing the buffalo with his tusks. This unprovoked atta.ck, which occurred in front of a group of tourists in Kruger National Park (including one lady who was not impressed with the elephant), exemplifies how sa.vage nature can be.
Although the reason for the elephant’s h.ostile behavior is unknown, it is most likely that the elephant was suffering from “musth,” a condition in which bull elephants’ testosterone levels skyrocket. While this is supposed to be for reproduction purposes, it has the unintended consequence of making the elephant h.ostile. Another possibility suggested by the video’s publisher, Kruger Sightings, is that the elephant is defending a watering hole from the buffalo, despite the fact that such territorial behavior is unusual for elephants that live nomadic lives. It could be a combination of the two, with musth enhancing the elephant’s response.
